The timing could hardly have been better.
Just days after Rory McIlroy achieved sporting immortality at Augusta National, the competition where he made history 20 years earlier got underway.
Fittingly, another teenager won the 2025 West of Ireland Championship at County Sligo Golf Club.
Dylan Holmes battled biblical conditions to defeat veteran Colm Campbell 2 & 1 in an unforgettable final.
At 18, Holmes became the youngest tournament winner since a 16-year-old McIlroy retained his title in 2006. It was the perfect birthday present for his father, Karl, a PGA professional.
Perhaps we’ll soon see Holmes wearing the Green Jacket.
Very few tournaments become instant classics.
The 2025 Irish Men’s Amateur Open at Seapoint Golf Links was one of them.
Stuart Grehan began the final day tied for fourth, four shots behind the joint leaders, Lewy Hayward and Gerard Dunne.
But Grehan produced a near-perfect 66 to take longtime frontrunner Hayward to what proved to be an epic playoff.
Eventually, after three more nail-biting holes, the hometown hero prevailed on the 10th green to claim the title.
Fun fact:
Seapoint is one of six world-class championship links you can play on a golf tour along Ireland’s East Coast in 2026.
James Kingston produced a masterful final round performance at Mount Juliet to clinch the 2025 OFX Irish Legends by the narrowest of margins.
Incredibly, the South African birdied five of the last six holes to card a decisive 66 for an overall 12-under-par score, which left him one clear of Peter Baker, Keith Horne and Darren Fichardt.
Following a second-round 72, Kingston started the day with a mountain to climb.
But he clawed his way back into contention through inch-perfect iron work. Ahead of the par-4 18th hole, such was the top-heavy leaderboard, a playoff seemed unavoidable.
However, only Kingston could muster the required birdie, and the title was his.
David Howard delivered a nerveless final-day showing at County Louth Golf Club to win the East of Ireland Championship by a single shot.
Howard, whose father assumed bag duties, was the sole player to card four par or better rounds at beautiful Baltray for an overall score of five under.
Not that his victory was straightforward.
Howard began the final day tied for fourth but steadily overcame the deficit during the 36-hole endgame.
However, after edging ahead, he bogeyed 17.
So, Howard needed at least a four from the par-5 18th to secure the title.
His birdie sealed the deal.
Lottie Woad, the world’s No.1 amateur, coasted to a six-shot victory at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open for her maiden win on the Ladies European Tour.
Woad’s performance on the O’Meara Course was anything but amateur.
Impressively, the 21-year-old broke 70 in all four rounds en route to a final score of -21.
However, her status meant the €67,500 winner’s cheque went to the runner-up, Madelene Sagstrom.
Elsewhere, Anna Foster, who shared 12th place, was the best of the record-breaking Irish contingent at Carton House, Fairmont.
Ultimately, the main event of the 2025 golf tournaments in Ireland was never in doubt.
Scottie Scheffler, the world No.1, coasted to victory at The 153rd Open Championship.
At Royal Portrush, Scheffler ended the week on -17 to claim his first Claret Jug and fourth Major following his PGA Championship triumph in May.
The New Jersey native can now complete his career Grand Slam at the 2026 U.S. Open.
Speaking of Grand Slam winners, Rory McIlroy shared seventh with Robert McIntyre and 2024 winner Xander Schauffele on his much-anticipated homecoming.
In truth, Scheffler’s four-shot win on the Dunluce Links was far more comprehensive than the leaderboard suggests.
Although Harris English undoubtedly earned his second-place finish before a 278,000-strong crowd in Northern Ireland.
Meanwhile, fresh from his victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, Chris Gotterup (-12) took third spot to continue a fairytale year that has endeared him to fans on both sides of the Atlantic.
Lahinch Golf Club erupted with joy when Jonathan Keane sank his putt on the 18th green to become the first local to win the South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship since 1968.
The six-footer gave Keane a 1up victory over Caolon Rafferty in a dramatic final that ebbed and flowed right until the end.
Indeed, having emerged from a starting field of 151, either golfer would have made a worthy champion for the 131st edition of ‘The South’. But it was Keane who held his nerve in the decisive moment.
Fittingly, JD Smyth, who won the prestigious tournament 57 years ago, was on the iconic Old Course to congratulate the jubilant 2025 victor.
Keane now joins legends like Paul McGinley, Joe Carr and Graeme McDowell on the winner’s list.
What’s next for Lahinch? The much-anticipated 2026 Walker Cup.
Exciting times in the Southwest.
It’ll be tough to top last year’s Irish Open.
Sure, it ended in heartbreak for the prodigal son.
But Rasmus Hojgaard’s epic 1-shot victory over Rory McIlroy at Royal County Down ranks among the highlights of the 2024 European Tour.
Interestingly, Rory won the 2016 equivalent at this year’s world-famous venue.
The K Club – at the Palmer North – will host the 2025 Amgen Irish Open from September 4-7.
Notably, the championship parkland course also staged the 2006 Ryder Cup.
And it will welcome the Irish Open again in 2027.
Meanwhile, The Island Golf Club is the current frontrunner for 2026.

Finally, of all Ireland’s golf tournaments in 2025, this one will likely deliver the most thrilling start.
Both for competitors and spectators.
The North of Ireland Open returns to Portstewart Golf Club from September 18-20.
And its Strand Course boasts arguably the greatest opening hole in the game.
From an elevated tee, it plunges downhill and doglegs right to the heaving Atlantic.
Tubber Patrick sets the stage for a remarkable round through the dunescape called Thirsty Hollow.
Needless to say, Portstewart is a must-play on any golf trip to Northern Ireland.
